San Juan Capistrano, CA - November 27, 2007 - Robert Emmett McDonough (F'49) for whom Georgetown's McDonough School of Business was named, passed away on November 21, 2007. Mr. McDonough was a member of the business school's Board of Advisors and Georgetown University's Board of Directors, and he was a longtime Georgetown volunteer and devoted alumnus.
Mr. McDonough's leadership gift to name the business school in 1998 as part of the Third Century Campaign was the largest single gift in Georgetown's history. In making his gift, Mr. McDonough said that he wanted to do "something special" for Georgetown, and this spirit of optimism infused all of his work on behalf of the university.
Mr. McDonough received his undergraduate degree from the Edmond A. Walsh School of Foreign Service in 1949. After working as an executive in the oil industry, he founded Remedy Intelligent Staffing, a temporary staffing service. He opened the first office in 1965 in Riverside, CA and built the company to over 260 offices throughout the United States.
In a message to the McDonough School of Business community, Dean George Daly said "Bob McDonough was a man of exceptional intelligence, grace and generosity who lived the American Dream and worked to make it possible for others to do so. His contributions to Georgetown University and the McDonough School went far beyond his naming gift. He visited the school often, always in the spirit of optimism and good will that colored his personality and world view. He and his wife Simone welcomed incoming Georgetown students at an annual party at their California home. He was a loyal and active member the School's Advisory Board and rarely missed one of its meetings. It is an understatement to say that he will be missed by all who knew him."
The volunteer leadership positions he held at Georgetown included membership on the Alumni Association Board of Governors and the McDonough School Board of Advisors, as well as leadership roles in the Georgetown Club of Orange County. At the time of his death, he was serving his fourth term on the Georgetown University Board of Directors.
Mr. McDonough is survived by his wife, Dr. Simone B. McDonough; a son, Robert McDonough, Jr.; a daughter, Susan Mikos; a granddaughter, Meaghan Mikos (C'91, MBA'95); grandsons David John McDonough (B'02) and John Thomas McDonough (B'09), as well as other family members.
Services will be held this Friday, November 30, at 10:30 a.m. at Mission Basilica in San Juan Capistrano, CA.
