Spending a year, semester, or summer studying overseas is an extraordinary way
to grow and develop as a student. While studying abroad is not a requisite of
graduation, the number of students who participate in one of the 30-plus program has grown over the last few years.
Georgetown University offers numerous opportunities to study abroad; the University has
partnerships with over 70 foreign universities and colleges in 35 countries.
Most programs are geared toward the student's junior year- whether fall semester,
spring semester, full academic year, or a summer program, such as Oxford and Hong Kong.
Students apply for study abroad programs through the
Office of
International Programs (OIP) and in conjunction with the Undergraduate
Deans' Office. There is a University-wide committee which nominates students
for study abroad sites. There are several factors considered by the committee and,
as you would suspect, not everyone who applies is nominated. The University
and the MSB feel strongly about the benefits of studying abroad. However,
study abroad remains a privilege, not a right. Ours is a direct matriculation
model which means students are fully integrated into the foreign system and
are expected to follow the rules and regualtions of the host institution.
It has been the goal of the
Office of International Programs and the Undergraduate Deans' offices to
identify foreign opportunities that provide for academic, social, language,
and cultural enrichment across the spectrum of majors and countries. A
list of the foreign universities, colleges, and programs which support the
business curriculum is provided below. Additional information and study abroad sites can
be found at the Office of International Programs. Careful consideration
needs to be given to your decision to study abroad; there is an unlimited
number of benefits associated with such an opportunity, however, there needs
to be sound and thorough soul-searching and research done to identify the
best program for you, your major, your language ability, and your long term
goals. As you would suspect, some sites support majors more easily than others,
therefore having some idea of your intended major (Accounting, Finance,
International Business, Management, Marketing, or Operations & Information Management)
can be quite helpful when researching study abroad opportunities. |
